Moments for the Heart

Welcome back, Weekend Writing Warriors. I’m glad you’re back for this week. It was exciting to introduce you to the antagonist of The Five Barred Gate, Official Edwards. I hope you enjoy it and that it whets your appetite enough to want to explore The Five Barred Gate even further.

TFBG is set in a Dystopian world where it is illegal to be offensive. Federal laws exist that prohibit people from saying certain things. As you witnessed first hand, Jacob faced severe consequences by violating these laws. Of course, there are some… {cough, cough…no not corona…Edwards} that take this to the extreme.

Now that we know what our characters are up against, Let’s find out what they are fighting for. Jacob is our main character. He is in a battle within himself. As you have read the last couple of weeks, he has a mouth on him. It is one of the things he struggles with. But if you also remember from past snippets he meets Eric while in this prison. (past snippets were from later on in novel, I backtracked to introduce Edwards) So, you also know that he does get out of this. (Yes in three months, just as Edwards said. –At least hes a man of his word.)

This is where we pick up this week. After Edwards, After meeting Eric in prison. After his release. What is Jacob fighting for? What matters to him more than anything? Let’s take a look:

The Five Barred Gate Synopsis:
Have you ever wondered what would happen if the Non-Offensive Movement in the United States became federal law? What would happen to the freedoms guaranteed to us through the Constitution? This is the story of Jacob Andrews. He is faced with the decision to follow his heart and disregard what the law says about how he should live; even if it means his life.

Snippet:
Fifteen minutes and two glasses of water later, a dark green Civic pulled up to an open space at the far end of the lot. Here she comes. Jacob’s heart skipped a beat as he watched her, sitting in the car for several minutes. He was afraid she would change her mind and drive away, and prayed she wouldn’t.

At last her door opened and she stepped out. Her beauty took his breath away, and he remembered how he felt the first time he saw her. He cursed himself mentally for all the stupid, thoughtless things he’d said to her; things that hurt, things that demeaned, things that crushed her spirit.

She walked toward the diner alone. True to her word, she hadn’t brought Michael.

If you have ever been in the situation Jacob finds himself in, estranged, then you know the feeling of seeing the woman you love approach you. Jacob has experienced a real life change, Renae just does not know this yet. So love is the one thing he will have to fight for. Ahh, but the bigger question is What does Edwards have to do with all of this? Hmmm….
