Weekend Writing Warriors 8 – 8/9/2020 – Untitled WIP

Welcome back Weekend Writing Warriors. I have been so excited lately that my new book, Little Reminders of Who I Am, comes out this week that I have had little time to think about much else. I almost forgot to get this snippet ready. But, I am sitting here with my wife, bingeing on Blue Bloods, as we have been doing lately, getting your weekly snippet together.

No, it’s not for me to gather research for this untitled novel. The flow of this book more follows a Chicago PD style. In fact, some of the first chapters take the feel of the show. If you have seen the show you may have noticed a similarity between Atwood and certain desk Sergeant. We will see much more of her as the novel progresses.

Last week we left Grady heading out the door on his way to the murder scene where Masters has summoned him:

“If you are going to ‘protect and serve’ you really need to get to know your city, Grade,” his wife jested,

“Yes, babe.” Tell me something I don’t know he thought to himself. Right now, he was more interested in not getting shot by his new partner. He finished with a heavy coat and a kiss to the back of his wife’s head and he was out the door.

SYNOPSIS:
Lieutenant Daniel Masters is a 27-year veteran Savannah Georgia Major Crimes Detective. He has seen many crime scenes like the one he saw last February. Little did he know this one would change his life. Grady, the newest addition to his team, is the first to see the abnormalities, but will the rest of the team listen in time. There is a serial murder on the loose in South Georgia, and for some reason the killer leaves their final victim alive right before committing suicide. But why? Masters and Grady must find out before its too late and the next killer strikes again.

SNIPPET:
Thirty-two minutes, two wrong turns, and a coffee stop for good measure later, Grady made his way through Forsythe Park. Luckily, he had caught his forgotten face in the mirror and grabbed an emergency Bic he stored in the glove box. Now, clean shaven and only one nick for his trouble, he was ready for anything.

Only one set of lights was flashing now, they belonged to the detective first on scene he later found out. He found his Lieutenant fast enough. He was the towering figure in the dark trench coat with steam coming from his ears over by his staple Caprice. Grady half jogged over, not wanting to drop the coffee.

“Whatcha do, walk?” he questioned, seeing him come out of the park.

***Uh oh, Mighty Warriors that doesn’t sound good. But we cant leave the scene hanging there, so here is a bit more, let’s see if Grady can pull this one out.***

“Not entirely. I passed up the street and everything being one way, didn’t want to drive back around. So I parked and backtracked on foot. Easier.” Grady said out of breath, extending a coffee as a peace offering. “It’s black. I have creamer and sugar in a bag in my coat pocket.”

“Don’t take it,” Masters said taking the cup, removing the lid and sipping it.

That’s a good gesture, Grady told himself. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I lived so far from here.”

Masters sipped his coffee again as if he didn’t hear. He sat up from the car and walked toward the building, “Follow me.”

Coffee, the great equalizer. Let’s hope it calmed the situation enough to get on Masters good side. We will find out more next week. That is if I can get beyond the promotion of Little Reminders. Well, either way you will get your dose of this snippet.

    1. Once Masters understands Grady’s experience is solid, he will learn to trust him more. Once Grady learns that his boss is not as tough as he seems to be, they will get along nicely.

  1. LOL. Did not want to get too stereotypical. Not all LEOs enjoy the sweet treats. And thanks. Congratulation on your new release as well. 🙂 Seems many of us are getting our books to market. It’s a good feeling to finally get this one out there. Been a long road.

    1. Can’t place him? Do you mean that you can’t see his face? With this being a WIP do you think I need to add a little bit of description in chapter one? And thanks. I am excited. Two days and counting!!

  2. Only one cut by a dry shave in a car with a bic…. that is impressive. I bet he’s a pro at the shaving in the car routine. The way you set up Master’s in the previous snippets made me really nervous he wasn’t going to accept the coffee. I was actually worried it was going to end differently for Grady! Great snippet!
