We deal with it every day. We see a post, or a tweet that gets us riled up and we feel we must comment on it. Or let’s bring it closer to home, someone says something to us, and we open our mouths and stick our sneakers up to the heel inside. It’s inevitable that if we have a strong opinion on a topic we will be faced with a situation where we will be challenged with voicing our stance on that topic.
We all have convictions, and we all have strong feelings on a variety of different topics. But as I have learned over the course of time and making mistakes, there is a time for everything. This includes religious discussion. Just because there is a topic about God it doesn’t mean I need to interject my two cents about it. This can never be truer than on social media. My experience is that in many cases it is someone bating me into a heated discussion that will inevitably go nowhere.
God does instruct us that we are to teach others about Him. But it also tells us not to get into foolish arguments. If you have been on social media long enough you know how to spot these. And I am doing my best not to be drawn in. It’s tough because it would be wonderful to be wise and win over some of these fools. But to entertain fools is to become the fool myself. So, I am working on it.
God does not need us to defend Him. God asks us to teach others about Him. There is a difference. When we can see through the instigator’s intentions and step back from their bating, then we can focus on spreading the Gospel the way it should be. And sharing the love of God the way He desires us to.
