Does wearing a seatbelt mean you will never get in a car accident? No, it means you’ll be safer when you do. There is never a guarantee that any safety device in a car will keep you safe. Even today’s safety features, including Automatic Emergency Braking or Rear Automatic Breaking, will not keep you entirely safe if another vehicle is going to hit you. We are always at the mercy of other drivers on the road.
The same can be said of our Christian walk. Just because you accept Jesus doesn’t mean you won’t have trouble; it just means you will have someone to turn to when you do. In fact, the Bible teaches us that we will have trouble. In John 16:33 Jesus teaches, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
God loves us and has promised us a secure future when we believe in Him. But we still live in this sinful world and are subject to what happens around us. This can include trials in our lives. Whether it be from the sin that we allow in our life, or the circumstances that surround us. The guarantee that we have is that God will see us through it.
For instance, my wife and I have been through two miscarriages, a bankruptcy due to helping out a family member, and an affair that should have ended our marriage. We had trouble. But God’s good grace held our marriage together. We chose to ride out the bad and today our marriage is stronger than ever. Our focusing on Christ and his promises saw us through the bad and led us on to what we have today.
God has the same for you. The promises that saw our marriage through hell and back and the disciples through their loss when Jesus left them, is the same promise that sees us through our experiences today. Yes, we will see trouble, but we will get through it when Christ is our focal point. Trust in Him and don’t steer to the right or left. He will guide you.
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”” – Isaiah 30:21
