This last week I have been working on my mother-in-law’s car. My son is usually the mechanic who tinkers away under the hood, but since he’s moved out, the job has fallen on me. It’s not so much that I can’t do it, I have seen my share of wrenches and oil pans. It’s just that the work needs to be done. The problem is that so much needs to be done with it and it seems that when one thing goes wrong and I fix it, another issue pops up.
The last task was replacing the tension pully, but now we realize that it overheats. So that means this weekend I will be replacing the thermostats. These are just dominoes that have been falling with other things that have gone wrong with this car. My poor mom. It has made me think about how our lives are. We often juggle so many things, fixing one thing only to find other things that need fixin’.
However, we have something greater than a willing grandson with a mediocre knowledge of mechanics. We have a Savior who knows about brokenness and has been through every situation you and will ever face. He knows about being rejected, he knows about being unloved, he understands about that temptation you face; he has been through it all.
I am confident that I will get this car running again after I get the parts I need, just as I am confident that Christ is the answer for a body that is run down and broken. We just need to allow the great mechanic under the hood of our spirit to fix what we can’t fix on our own. We just need to accept Him. He loves us and he died for us so we can be healed and made whole no matter how broken we may be.
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
