As parents, we always hope our kids pay attention and emulate our behavior as adults. We hope to pass on to the next generation good habits, a focused work ethic, and a generous spirit. You never know how much of it soaks in until they face events in their lives, and they are up against making those choices.
This last week I was shown an event in one of my son’s lives that proved that kids pay attention. And the words came from his mouth. He told Carolyn, “I get this from dad.” Chris had a flat last night at 2AM on the highway. Without a spare, he left the car there overnight; Carolyn went to pick him up and took him back this morning. Well, after replacing the repaired tire, another vehicle had a blowout not too far behind his car. Most people would hang their heads and say, “What a shame.” But not Chris. He went and helped them. And yes, it would’ve been something I would’ve done.
Another thing I gleaned from this incident. Something for this other driver. If Chris didn’t have that flat when he did, where he did, and went back to fix it when he did, Chris would not have been where he was to help. I am a strong believer in God’s perfect timing and that He uses us for those purposes.
So, the next time we have a minor inconvenience, a delay, or a flat tire somewhere, don’t get mad, angry, or frustrated… maybe God is placing you right where you need to be, right where He wants you for someone else’s purpose.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10
