SNIPPET:
Summary:
The Transference II is a sequel to The Transference. It takes place roughly six months after the close of the first novel. The team is settling back into normal cop life when the past resurfaces and they are sent back into the craziness of tracking a killer who should’ve been dead long ago.
A bit of background so you can understand what’s going on. Sophia if from the first book. She was the final person that Tanner possessed. She is a small time drug runner in this book with her partner Greer. Tanner is back and possess another individual, but he is using her to commit his crimes again. Esteban is room service, and Masters is a retired detective working to find Thoran.
Here is a bit from last week:
Once through the lobby and on the street, her ears began to ring; something wasn’t right. Her eyes scanned the street, but she saw nothing. Cars puttered, the tourist crowds hustled by, yet nothing seemed out of place, but something was off. Thoran looked to cross the road against the traffic, but again she didn’t feel safe on the path she was taking. The second she stepped into the street, a voice called to her.
“Jaywalking is a crime, you know?”
We will pick up right were we left off. Let’s discover who Thoran’s visitor is.
Thoran turned to see an older gentleman with a scruffy face. The familiar grin struck forgotten memories.
“You are a difficult woman to track, Sophia.”
“Good afternoon, Lieutenant Masters,” Sophia Thoran said, stepping back on the sidewalk. Her senses began to calm, knowing the reason for their activity. “What brings you to the island?”
Masters laughed. “Don’t play games with me, Thoran. We both know why I’m here.”
“So, they are sending retired cops now to apprehend those trying to make a few extra dollars?”
There is your ten, let’s continue on for a bit.
“No, I’m here of my own volition. I have to see things through, retired or not,” Masters said. “Nevertheless, you are under arrest, Ms. Thoran.”
“Do you even have that power, ex-Lieutenant Masters?” Thoran said.
“I have enough power to detain you until the authorities arrive to escort you downtown,” Masters looked up to the hotel. “Now that I’ve confirmed you are here and you’ve been detained, all it takes is a phone call.”
“I suppose your lap dog, Grady, will be rushing down here to escort me to jail.”
“That’s usually how it works—both you and your friend upstairs, disabled or not, are criminals. In the eyes of the law, you are both equally guilty.”
Thoran looked to the hotel, to the café across the street, then up to Masters. If Tanner saw her with Masters, he would be furious. He would jump to conclusions. She needed to get away. Arrested or not, she needed to act. She looked around again, running through scenarios; each ended worse than the other. Bolting would trigger a manhunt and ended up with Greer upstairs captured; that couldn’t happen. Masters was an honest cop, so a 100K bribe wouldn’t do. From the recesses of her mind, an inner voice spoke, giving her only one option.
Thoran sighed. “I surrender, Detective. Sorry, Lieutenant. I will go with you willingly. As for my friend upstairs, he is on medication and just took it. He will be asleep for hours. You don’t need to rush up for him. I’m not lying about that. There is no need to. He is older and disabled, as you know. He is no threat.”
“I believe you,” Masters said, taking her arm. “Now, follow me.” Thoran followed his lead.
Masters’ vehicle was parked across the street and around the side of the building. Thoran and the inner voice grinned with the seclusion his parking provided. Masters opened the passenger side rear door, and in the inner pocket, he pulled out a pair of handcuffs.
“Sophia Thoran. You are under arrest for—” Masters began, but before he could continue, Sophia Thoran once again summoned the strength of Stephen Tanner and elbowed Masters in the gut, knocking the wind out of him. He fell forward into the backseat, coughing and gasping. Then the voice came.
Thoran felt it from within her, something she hadn’t felt in years: anger and resentment. When Masters tried to get up again, she booted him, and he fell further into the vehicle, hitting his head on the opposite door. As he landed, his pant leg hiked up, revealing his ankle holster. Thoran laughed, or was it Tanner?
Then, without thought, Thoran pulled the weapon and fired three shots into Masters’ back. He coughed and gasped, then breathed no more. Thoran tilted her head, looking into the vehicle, then came to her senses. What if someone heard those shots? She had to leave. But the weapon? Looking around, she saw a dumpster; too obvious. She had to take it with her. The pier!
Sorry it was a bit long, but here we say goodbye to a beloved character. Kind of a hand tip to those who haven’t read book one, but it is where we are in this snippet series. I debates about including it, but we all know characters move on.
