Hello fellow Weekend Writing Warriors. I made it. Was able to get a post in. So, today 16 turns 17. I was flooded with image memories from every side this weekend. Melt your heart moments. Just wow, to be the dad of a little girl.
I was off a week, though. Her party isn’t until next weekend. I am busy today, though. Our church is having an event which I committed to weeks ago, then a funeral for a lady who had been part of the church for decades. Her grandson and my son had played ball for a little bit. Small towns just make a difference with community. If you know, you know.
You can follow me on social media, especially on Twitter, or X nowadays. I post all links, especially for my Two Twenty Two Tuesday YouTube vlog. I always have something going on, X is the best place to keep up. God bless, friends.
SYNOPSIS:
Detective Grady is haunted by the final events of the second novel through a series of nightmares. Fear drives him to ask his tech genius, Carmen, to begin monitoring all search engines, news sites, and social media platforms for crimes that resemble their case two years ago.
After another nightmare, Grady begins to see the department psychologist which helps him. Two weeks go by and Grady decides to ask Carmen to cancel the search, but that morning, Carmen has found something. This time in Mexico.
SNIPPET:
Still writing day by day. A couple more chapters written. Let’s get back into it:
Here is the last bit from last week:
In an effort to help Grady’s tendency for tardiness, he and his second in command made a deal. If he arrived late, he would owe LaCrosse ten dollars. If he were on time, LaCrosse would be awarded ten. This has been going on for close to a year now. Grady was doing well for a couple of months, but as with all good intentions, old habits resurfaced. To date, LaCrosse could’ve made a decent down payment on a new vehicle.
“Tomorrow’s another day,” Grady said. He knew it was just a game now. And it wasn’t so much the money. It was the accountability and appearance. He was grateful for it, and the team didn’t see it, at least he didn’t think they did.
We pick up in the next scene. Grady’s team is hard at work trying to find their current criminal:
The team had been briefed and was busy with their assignments. Ryan was with Carmen, attempting to track Mr. Lockhart. Carmen’s request for TN highway cams was approved, but they were few and far between. Not fully knowing which direction he was heading they took their bet on interstate 40, Carmen took southwest, Ryan took northeast. Ryan had his bet on his route. If they were heading out to Carolina, they were heading for Canada. North was his bet.
“I bet that he’ll take the 640 then up Interstate 75. Seventy-five will take him into Detroit, then into Canada,” Ryan said.
There is your ten, or so. Let’s continue on for a bit more.
“He could also head south, 75 into Chattanooga, then over to the 59 into New Orleans, then to the 10. The 10 can take him all the way to California. He can access Mexico through Texas and California,” Carmen reasoned.
“Care to place a wager?” Ryan said, with a clap of his hands, rubbing them together.
“Loser buys lunch for a week,” Carmen said.
Ryan puckered, trying to contemplate what he may be getting himself into with Carmen’s recent taste for the local sandwich shop. It has always been the sandwich of the day. Even if he lost, he felt he could afford the cost of being wrong.
“You got it,” Ryan put out his fist, which she proudly bumped.
“Don’t take your eyes off that screen, newbie. We can’t miss our target,” Carmen said.
Ryan chuckled. He knew the ribbing would be there still. Even though he was no longer bottom man, that honor belonged to Hansen. But he had been gone for almost a year. It was their way of saying they missed him. He was quick with getting back into the swing of things and fit in like a glove.
“So, how many cams do we have access to, actually?” Ryan asked, sitting at a chair beside hers, and taking the cordless mouse she gave him.
“There will be more cams the closer you get to the city, and you will have more than I will since you are closer to Knoxville. I don’t have many until Chattanooga,” Carmen explained.
Ryan clicked through his four screens, which were the four cameras before Knoxville, no blue Honda. Carmen was quiet, he assumed she was having the same luck. It occurred to Ryan that technology could be doing this work for them.
“Carmen, let me ask you. Isn’t there software that can find that car without us staring at a screen for hours?”
“Yes, but they are not foolproof,” Carmen began. “About a year and a half ago, we were searching for a subject, and we were using the approved AI program that searched cams for license plates, makes and models of vehicles, and even drivers’ faces. But it let us down. I know because I went back and I found footage of our perp passing not one, but two traffic cams. One was at a stoplight. Ever since then, I have not trusted them. Yes, I still have the program running, but I am the ultimate authority.”
“I see,” Ryan said, continuing to click back and forth through his feeds.
After about five minutes and several rotations, one of Carmen’s four boxes lit up, and a notification tone sounded. She clicked on the screen, and it brought the box full screen.
“Dang it,” Ryan said in frustration that he lost the bet. “Well, let’s see what we got. Let’s catch a perp.”
I am slowly working my way back into getting some form of a writing schedule here. But writing is getting done, even if its 500 words here 150 words there.
