This past week, the heavens put on a brilliant display of color, the Aurora Borealis. What many may not realize is what causes this phenomenon. Well, you may know that it is due to the sun throwing out a flare from a storm. What you may not know is that the Earth has a protective covering, the magnetic field. This is why these solar flares do not spell out death for our planet. Most rays are deflected around Earth. As they are rerouted, the rays that make it through create a colorful display, the Aurora Borealis.
Everything in this world, and out of this world, is created by God. We can simply look around and see His hand. We can look up at the sky and see God’s handiwork. Every star has its place. Every phenomenon has a purpose. The earth’s magnetic field is in place for a reason. It has a design. Placed around us to protect His creation. By design.
In Psalm 147, the Bible talks about God counting the stars, calling them by name. I have always been a star gazer. In my twenties, I was an avid shower watcher. In fact, one of Carolyn’s and I’s first dates was watching the legendary ‘98 Leonid Meteor Shower.
I became an astronomy expert, learning stars and constellation names so I could get closer to my Lord as he spread out the firmament. Even today with every sunset, I think of God sitting on a stump and, as each star became visible in the sky, calling out its name. It became more and more amazing how big God was and how little I was, but He still cared about me. And he cares about you.
I was sharing this with our kids in Sunday School this last week. From day one, everything was set in place. The sky you see today is the sky God created the day he put them in place. It is the sky Adam looked at, David looked at when he wrote this Psalm… it was the sky Jesus looked at. It is all by His design. Everything is set in place. From the word “in the beginning.” Our God is an Awesome God!!
“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.” – Psalm 19:1
