I discussed being busy in my vlog this week. I know it wasn’t the first time I’ve been up to my ears with things to do, especially this time of year, but it was the first time that a wedding was the primary focus. It even trumped our Christmas celebration. Our usual holiday gift exchange almost seemed like an afterthought. It was an odd experience. When everything had settled down, Carolyn and I weren’t sure what to do. We had gotten so used to being busy that we weren’t sure if we needed to be doing something.
In our lives, we can become so busy that we tend to leave a mess in our wake. We get so focused on the end game that little else matters but the end goal. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a wedding or a yearly family reunion. Busyness has many faces. It can come in the guise of work, extra-curricular activities, or even those side jobs we tend to get involved in that always seem to get in the way of resting for the evening.
When we move too fast, things can get out of control, becoming a huge mess. We grow frustrated and overwhelmed. Then we try to fix things on our own; that never ends well. Being too busy often poses the temptation to seek out shortcuts to ‘make life easier.’ But we both know those often end up creating more catastrophes. The more we mess up, the more we try to clean things up. It’s not supposed to be that way. We don’t need to be our own saviors.
We may face difficulties, but difficult situations can be remedied simply by turning them over to God. God tells us to rely on him in all situations. Whether it be a busy week with family visitation, your place of employment, or that side project around the house. Let God be in all areas of your life. And rest when you need to. As the saying goes, come apart; or you will come apart.
