Moments for the Heart

Hey Writing Warriors. Here we are entering Thanksgiving week. I have been one busy beaver. I had three client assignments all hit me at once, I am still working the final client as I write this. But it is such a blessing as work has been so slow this month. In case some of you do not know, my full time job is Freelance Writing.

These assignments have even cut into my NaNo writing time. I am chapters behind where I want to be. But I have all next week, and I am looking forward to it. Thanksgiving week is when I usually do the bulk of my NaNo writing anyhow. I have a tradition of writing my Nano project and baking pecan and pumpkin pies.

But until then we have a WeWriWa snippet to post. And we left off at the end of Chapter Four. Grady and the rest of the team were wrapping up in Nelson’s apartment when Grady noticed something about the crime scene that was unlike the crime scene photos from the previous cases. And he needed to get back to the station to check his supposition.

Grady wasn’t listening to the exchange. He was over near the chair. He stood at the chair and took the steps that Tanner had taken to get into the position of his demise. Four steps. Four good steps, just about six feet. He looked at the chair again, then at his feet. Nettles had joined him, not really sure what he was looking at, but studying all the same.

“I have to get back to the station,” Grady said, his eyes darting around the crime scene.

“Why, what’s wrong,” Nettles questioned, exchanging glances with the chair and Grady.

“I need to see the older case files photos. Something is missing here.”

SYNOPSIS:

Lieutenant Daniel Masters is a 27-year veteran Savannah Georgia Major Crimes Detective. He has seen many crime scenes like the one he saw last February. Little did he know this one would change his life. Grady, the newest addition to his team, is the first to see the abnormalities, but will the rest of the team listen in time. There is a serial murder on the loose in South Georgia, and for some reason the killer leaves their final victim alive right before committing suicide. But why? Masters and Grady must find out before its too late and the next killer strikes again.

SNIPPET:

Carmen had retrieved the files Grady had requested by the time he returned to the station. He found an empty room with a large enough table to spread the files out and went to work examining each case, confirming his suspicions. Three hours later, when he was comfortable enough with his theory, he called in LaCrosse and Nettles.

“Where’s Masters?” Grady asked. “He should be here for this.”

“He’s on his way,” Nettles said coming back in with four cups of fresh coffee.

Grady led them back into the empty room which now was lined with photos, statements, and file notes all painting a picture of what Grady saw, or rather what he didn’t see, up in Nelson’s apartment.

***That is this week’s ten. Here is a bit more to take you a little bit deeper into the scene***

Grady had combed through each of the four files from the past crime scenes. Each had detailed descriptions of gruesome murders that had taken place over the last six months to a year. Two male, two female; no age discrepancy, twenties to mid-forties. All were ritualistic, committed on top of coffee tables, and the victim was left in their undergarments with incisions that severed their femoral and brachial arteries, left to bleed to death. The only apparent difference with Nelson was that he survived.

Grady also noted the lack of defensive wounds on the victims. Nor did the scenes showed any sign of struggle. But with Mr. Nelson, there were reports of screaming, so he was incapacitated enough not to struggle, but aware enough to experience pain. He talked Nettles and LaCrosse through his findings. He wanted to get their perspective before bringing it to Masters. Just don’t screw this one up. When Carmen returned from lunch, he went over it all again to get her final approval.

“So, what do you guys think?”

Well we don’t officially get to hear his theory yet. But he is onto something. There is something about those old cases and what happened with Nelson that he can’t seem to shake. His gut is telling him something. Now he is ready to bring it to Masters.
