Weekend Writing Warriors – 12/19/21 – Little Reminders of Who I Was – Meeting Gary

Good evening fellow Writing Warriors. I was out of pocket last week with family visiting from out of state. If you remember, this was the week that the Bray’s celebrate Christmas. My mom made her yearly trek to Texas to spend with her family here. So all of our boys made the trip as well. And if you have stuck around my posts for any amount of time you know we have five kids. So our home nearly burst at the seams. It was a wonderful time of catching up, food, and making new memories. And now we get round two with just the four of us left in the home in just a few days.

I pray you have a great Chrsitmas wherever you are and that your time with family is blessed. Now without further ado, let’s get into this week’s snippet.

SYNOPSIS:

I am still working on an official Synopsis for this novel. — The book is about Derrick Anders. He is a college student who works in a bookstore. He is struggling with school, work, and a recent loss in his family. So, he has little time for friends, much less a love life in spite of a coworker, Breonna, who has her eyes set on him. I’m still working on an official Synopsis for this novel.

Carter has been sent to bring them together, just as he was sent to bring Deborah and Aaron together in the first installment. There will be obstacles on their road to getting together. a couple of missed opportunities, and an unexpected bump in the road for the one responsible for their connection. Carter may even need an old friend to help him get back on track.

SNIPPET:

Here is a little bit from our last time:

“You know me,” Breonna shrugged and smiled, which Derrick had to admit was pleasant. “Well, I gotta get back to work. Talk with ya later.”

Derrick returned to the front counter and finished his day with a couple more Mr. Johnsons but more Patty Clawsons, making his job tolerable. Every now and then, Breonna would pop her head around the corner to say hello, taking returns for restocking, more books that customers second-guessed themselves on. By closing time, his size 12’s hurt, and his mind was exhausted.

OKAY HERE WE GO WITH THE NEW SNIPPET: I am going to jump ahead a couple of scenes, this is the following morning, still in Chapter One:

After his shower and beard trim, Derrick checked the clock. If he hurried, he had enough time for a quick breakfast at the corner taco shop. He had class this morning, and if he wanted to beat the traffic he had to leave now for the shop around the corner.

A bell sounded when he opened the door. Gary, a regular was sitting in the corner nursing a cup of coffee. He had been a fixture since Derrick began eating at the restaurant, he was a 60-year-old widower with a possible drinking habit.

“I can’t believe Porter missed that shot last night,” Gary said, taking a sip from his steaming cup.

“You can’t make them all,” Derrick said, looking down from the wall menu. “It’s still early in the season. He needs to find his groove.”

“Yeah, I suppose.”

“Did you go out to watch it?”

“Out? No son, I was there,” Gary said, taking his eyes off his cup and meeting Derrick’s stare.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. Another member of the Lion’s Club had tickets and called me at the last minute. Lower level, center court.”

“Nice,” Derrick said, nodding. “Well, at least they won.”

“Yeah. But OT. If Porter hadn’t missed that shot,” Gary said, his head lowered to his cup, shaking. “Shame. Harden would have made it.”

“Perhaps,” Derrick couldn’t help but smile and laugh to himself.

Derrick’s order was called, and he bid his sulking friend farewell and headed out the door, where he would begin his hopeful traffic-free drive to the college.

Another semi-regular character here. I had originally had written Gary as a bus driver and written a chapter with him driving, but had forgotten that I had given Derrick an automobile. I debated on keeping it that way, but as I thought about it I found it simpler to re write the chapter and character. He will need the car later and I have plans for Gary.

Don’t you just love writing and writing then discovering those ‘oops’ moments and having to go back and fix them? 😐 I’m just glad I caught it early.

  1. Love this snippet, Jeff! I can see, hear and feel these characters with their easy conversation. It’s like being there. Breakfast at a taco shop? That’s brave, indeed!
