Hey, Weekend Writing Warriors. So much this week. Still working with NaNoWriMo as daily work has all but died out. It’s okay as I am editing a book for a client.
I also received a bit of bad news on the medical front. During one of my routine CT scans they found a mass on my Appendix. They are referring me to a General Surgeon to see about removing it. They will also probably fix the Hernia that I have. Hey, may as well with the hood open, right? I ask for your prayers as with Epilepsy, nothing is routine anymore.
Elissa Celebrates Christmas and Elissa Learns Thankfulness are available through Amazon!! I’m too excited to offer both books side by side for the holidays. Pick up your copies today to get in time to read to your kiddos!!
SYNOPSIS:
With NaNoWriMo, I am taking you on the journey with me and giving you snippets from the book I’m writing. Keep in mind that these will be raw and unedited. So, excuse errors and grammar.
My piece for NaNoWriMo will be The Five Barred Gate III. Considering that The Five Barred Gate II will be released on January 5th, it would be my next logical piece to pen. Enjoy.
The Five Barred Gate is a dystopian world where the government has enacted laws against freedom of speech. This has hurt the religious community the most.
SNIPPET:
Summary:
The Five Barred Gate III picks where The Five Barred Gate II leaves off. Derrick Andrews is talking with his wife, Rachel, and feels he needs to go with is dad, Jacob, to Austin to talk with the authorities. They’ve been demanding Jacob to release his sermons for scrutiny before they are delivered from the pulpit. He has refused. Facing arrest, he now wants to make his appeal.
Here is a bit from last week.
“Remember to be away from the body is to be at home with the Lord. But I understand your meaning. This room does carry the air of the supernatural. Maybe that is why Eric chose it,” Frank said.
The shuffling of feet came from the stairs behind the door, making both men jump. Frank reached for his back beltline.
“Whoever you are, you better identify yourself,” Frank announced. “I am armed and not afraid to employ my castle doctrine rights.”
We continue right were we left off. Jacob is our main character. Frank Dunham is a business owner and friend. Derrick is Jacob’s son.
“Relax, Mr. Dunham,” the voice said. “It’s me, Michael.”
Frank relaxed his grip on his still-holstered weapon.
“Michael?” Jacob said. “What are you doing here?”
Michael pushed open the door and the stairway light spilled onto the floor of the room. “I should ask you the same question. Two fences, and caution tape. What is this place?”
“This is the room I’ve been telling you about, Michael. Where Pastor Eric used to meet before we started in the school band hall. It’s an old fallout shelter from the 60s.”
::There is your ten, or so, but let’s continue a bit with the scene.::
“I would think so as many floors as we walked down. It’s lower than…” Michael paused.
“You can say it. That pit that Edwards had us in. I’m sure it held the same concept. But this place just has this one room.”
“That you know of,” Michael said.
“What do you mean?” Jacob looked up, then around the smoke-blacked space.
“Well, have you ever explored?”
“Well, no. Not myself. I just assumed that Eric had, and this was the only space down here.”
“Are there any false doors, even closets in the room or on the stairs leading down here? Michael asked.
Jacob looked to Frank who shrugged.
“You would think folks would know when a false door is staring them in the face,” Jacob said.
“You’d be surprised,” Frank said. “Did you know that in both our dining areas there is a pantry with a false door where we store chairs and tables for the restaurant?”
“No. Where?” Jacob asked.
Frank chuckled. “Below the five barred gate you are always beaming about.”
Jacob thought back to seeing the emblem of his life that hung on Dunham’s Steakhouse wall. He never considered, or noticed there could be a hidden door beneath it.
“I guess I never took the time to notice.”
“Well, it is well hidden within the pattern of the wall.”
“C’mon, Dad. You can see the scuffing on the floor if you look hard enough,” Michael said.
“Guess my eyes were on the gate,” Jacob said.
Frank chuckled. “There is a sermon in there somewhere, Pastor.”
“Keep your eyes on the gate and you won’t see the scuff marks in your life,” Michael said.
“There ya go, son,” Frank said with a point of his hat.
Ahhh. No worries. Crisis averted. But all will not be soo quiet for too long. This is Dystopian Suspense, and we are only in Chapter One. This drama stems from everything that takes place in previous books. You can read all about it stating with the Five Barred Gate.

How cool would it be to find a secret/hidden door in a place you’ve been going for years? I bet they’re going to find something of the sort down in that room. And sending prayers and positive thoughts your way, Jeff. Keep us informed!
