A gun runner is using a long-forgotten facility. As the team investigates, they discover more than meets the eye when clues lead them to realize the two events may be related.
It is only a matter of time before an old nemesis resurfaces and extends a challenge none of them expects.
SNIPPET:
Summary:
The Transference II is a sequel to The Transference. It takes place roughly six months after the close of the first novel. The team is settling back into normal cop life when the past resurfaces and they are sent back into the craziness of tracking a killer who should’ve been dead long ago.
A bit of background so you can understand what’s going on. Sophia if from the first book. She was the final person that Tanner possessed. She is a small time drug runner in this book with her partner Greer. Tanner is back and possess another individual, but he is using her to commit his crimes again. Esteban is room service.
Sophia Thoran’s phone rang right on the dot. She and Greer had just finished another late lunch provided by Esteban. Greer was asleep on his queen-sized bed while she flipped through the channels on TV. One Valentine’s Day movie here, a sporting event there, news stations promoting their propaganda, all boring to her. She would be glad for the distraction. She swiped to accept and tiptoed to the other room.
“This is Thoran,” she said.
“Took you long enough,” Tanner said.
“Oh, quit it. You know it takes me a while to answer sometimes. Always has.”
“I don’t like to wait,” Tanner said, then sat in silence. “You sure do know how to pick them. Esteban is a perfect specimen if I ever saw one. There is some of me still shuffling around inside that head of yours.”
“Can we knock off all the self-accolades and get down to it?”
“What time does his shift end?”
“He said he’s meeting Penny for dinner at eight and that she usually stays at his place on Monday nights. They both have Tuesday off. They sleep in, cook breakfast together, and enjoy the morning with no obligations.”
“Excellent,” Thoran could hear an exhale through the phone. She could picture him with his cheap cigarettes and smoke rings; it made her want to gag.
“Where did you want me to meet you?” Thoran asked.
“I’ll come get you. You’re on Trubey Island, right?”
“How did you—”
“Give me some credit, will ya?” Tanner said. “While Gradiosa and those fools upstairs haven’t been able to find you, I know how to do my job. Don’t worry though, they won’t find you. I’ve taken precautions to ensure they keep running in circles.”
“To be safe, don’t come to the hotel. I’ll meet you at the café across the street.”
“If you prefer,” Tanner said. “But don’t keep me waiting. You know I don’t like to sit alone.”
“I’m already dressed. I was just waiting for your call,” Thoran said.
“Good. I will meet you at the café in an hour,” Tanner said, then hung up.
Thoran set her phone on the basin and peeked out of the bathroom. Greer was still sound asleep. With his medication, he most likely would be out for a few hours. After finding her shoes and putting them on, she grabbed her entry card and van key and left the room, the door making its gentle click. Sophia Thoran exhaled, her mind shifting to her alternative life.
With each step, she became more aware of her surroundings. Some referred to it as the power of an arachnid. She felt like she had eyes all around, but superpowers were a work of fiction; to her this was real. Before she understood it, she felt it was paranoia. It was Greer that helped her understand there was more to it. When she gave in to it, it helped them survive and elude the authorities and criminals alike. Like that night in the warehouse. She knew something was off before Carlos did. It was how they escaped.
Of course, Tanner takes credit for her heightened awareness. He claims it was part of him still with her. She hated to admit that it made sense. Her inner awareness did seem to be the work of two working in unison; watching each other’s backs. The thought of him and her being in unison made her shiver. Seeing him and knowing him inside and outside of her made her ill.
Once through the lobby and on the street, her ears began to ring; something wasn’t right. Her eyes scanned the street, but she saw nothing. Cars puttered, the tourist crowds hustled by, yet nothing seemed out of place, but something was off. Thoran looked to cross the road against the traffic, but again she didn’t feel safe on the path she was taking. The second she stepped into the street, a voice called to her.
“Jaywalking is a crime, you know?”
Sorry, I know it was a bit long, but we needed to get the gist of the relationship between Sophia and Tanner. He once possessed her, and she still feels him within her. Eerily exciting. Then at the end here, we get a mysterious guest… ah, what fun..
