Moments for the Heart

Welcome back Weekend Writing Warriors. Here we are back again for another week of sharing our writings with our tight knit community. I’ve said it before, I will say it again, I live for today. Don’t forget to catch everyone else’s snippet this week. There is some really good stuff here.

As for this WIP here, we are neck deep in our investigation.

We just discovered that there are four more cases possibly linked to this one case. Let’s pick up where we left off last week.

Here is a bit from our last snippet:

Carmen plopped down four files on the desk in front of Grady.

“Four cases?”

“All open and unsolved. No forensics linking anything or anyone to any of them.” Carmen explained.

“Until today,” said Grady.

“Until today.”

SYNOPSIS:
Lieutenant Daniel Masters is a 27-year veteran Savannah Georgia Major Crimes Detective. He has seen many crime scenes like the one he saw last February. Little did he know this one would change his life. Grady, the newest addition to his team, is the first to see the abnormalities, but will the rest of the team listen in time. There is a serial murder on the loose in South Georgia, and for some reason the killer leaves their final victim alive right before committing suicide. But why? Masters and Grady must find out before its too late and the next killer strikes again.

SNIPPET:
“Does Masters know?”

“Hey, I’m just finding all of this out myself,” she said. “I haven’t had the time to call him. He should be here any minute anyhow.”

Grady picked up the four files and looked through each one. Sure enough, each victims arm and leg cuts were identical to the cuts inflicted upon Mr. Nelson. However, there seemed to be one difference. In the photos, there was an excessive amount of blood, much more than the Nelson crime scene. One familiarity was that each victim was placed flat on a coffee table and was dressed in nothing but under garments.

“Where were these other murders?”

“Two in Mississippi, one in Florida, the last in Alabama,” Carmen said with a bit of hesitance. “All in just the last nine months.”

“Are you serious?” Grady asked.

“That is as far as I set my parameters,” she said.

“So, there could be more?”

“Possibly,” she said.

“We need to call Masters,” Grady said.

“Call me for what?” A gruff voice called from the stairwell just as the entry buzzer sounded.

For the next half hour, Carmen filled in Masters on their discoveries. Masters went through two cups of coffee, taking it all in. Without interrupting, he allowed Carmen to give her point of view, her speculations, and even interjected Grady’s name here and there.

Grady learned that Masters was not as hard as he seemed to be. He was a reasonable man. At least when he respected you. And he could tell that he highly respected Carmen. He could only hope that he would earn that level of respect. He also understood that Carmen had worked for it, seeing her perform the last couple of hours.

“So, what do you think we should do next, Grady?” Masters asked, half looking at Carmen.

Was this a test? Grady looked at the files. He knew for now that Taylor would be a dead end. Their real lead would be the connection Taylor had to Nelson. And his first hunch was that there was a drug-running tie through his position as an Uber driver.

“Search Nelson’s car,” Grady said. “If he were running drugs, there would have to be evidence of it. We need to do it before he has a chance to dispose of it. While we are at it, we should search his place top to bottom. If we have a forensics team there, may as well sweep it for anything suspicious. Then we’d know for sure.”

Masters nodded. “Do it.”

And there we go, another layer deeper. More info on the four cases, but are they connected? Does Stuart Nelson know something that almost got him killed? What will they find when they search his car and home? We also see Masters testing the waters with Grady. Seeing if he can truly work a case. Will it pay off for him?

Next week I may skip ahead a bit as the remainder of this chapter just introduces the rest of Masters team and gives little action, and I really want to get into some meat of book. Well see what I can come up with. Either way, I am running out of what I can give you with this WIP.
