Good afternoon Weekend Writing Warriors. Writing again from a chilly South Texas. The weather cannot make up its mind down here. Eighties for a couple of days, then yesterday and today in the forties and fifties. UGH!! And yes I know up north it is much worse, I feel for y’all. Well, you didn’t come here for a South Texas weather update. You came for your Saturday Snippet. So, let’s begin.
BEFORE WE DIVE IN:
We are less than two months away!! The Transference hits shelves on May 11. This is the Crime Thriller I introduced you to last year. The cover is still a bit behind, but hopefully will be coming soon, I am really eager to promote it. I may share a snippet or two right before it’s rease to get you, and me, pumped up for its big release day. Maybe even a give-away. Look for that in April.
Okay, we are all caught up. Here we go for this week’s snippet.
SYNOPSIS:
(more of an outline right now) – Our main character is Michael Andrews. He is the son of Jacob and Renae, the MCs of the first novel. He was two years old then. He is now 24. Michael is married with twin daughters. His wife, Rachel is the granddaughter of Frank Dunham. He is the owner of a restaurant mentioned in the first novel and part of the original group that met.
Twenty years later, the laws have gotten stricter. Several amendments have been added to The Federal Speech Act. People are now more apt to turn someone in when they are offended. This has especially affected the religious community. Churches are sparse, even Our Saviour’s Cross, the local church that existed during TFBG has disbanded and gone into hiding again. Jacob had been the pastor since the end of the first novel.

SNIPPET:
We are continuing from where we left off last week. Michael is talking with his grandfather-in-law about the phone call he just received. He finds out that maybe his wife had done something suspicions. We are picking up where we left off. But first, let’s give you a couple of sentences from last week:
“What’s happened?” grandad asked, the conern immediate in his voice.
“I was hoping you knew. All I got was a call from an Official’s booking office that she had been taken into custody.”
“On what charges,” Frank Dunham said with the same questioning tone he had given the clerk.
“They said something about soliciting and violating some other laws of the Federal Speech Act.”
“That usually means she was saying something she oughtn’t.”
AND WE CONTINUE ON:
“Saying things? Like what?” Michael asked. He couldn’t think of anything Rachel could say that would get her arrested. Much less at the grocery store. What, was she complaining about the price of cereal or that the tomatoes weren’t ripe enough?
“Dunno. The only real things that could get someone in that much trouble would be speaking against someone in office or talking about God, and the person hearin’ it didn’t like it. All it takes is a phone call now, or an Official heard it firsthand. That’d do her in.”
“I don’t know. I don’t see Rachel doing that.” Michael said, shaking his head. He never knew his wife to be outspoken when it came to religion or politics.
“Just givin’ ya reasons,” Frank said. “But we both agree that she didn’t go pickin’ a fight.”
“Agreed. That isn’t Rachel.”
“Not my daughter in the least,” Mr. Dunham said with an exhale. “Let me call a buddy or two and see what I can find out. I’ll get back to you if I find out anything.”
“Thanks, Frank,” Michael said. He had known that Rachel’s father was connected with law enforcement and would call up the chain and find out what exactly happened. He arranged a time to pick up the kids and ended their call.
There you go, Writing Community. Another peek into The Five Barred Gate II. What could Rachel have done? A small glimpse into the possibilities. One thing to know here is that Frank Dunham has been there. He was part of the group in the first novel that dealt with the antagonist who was an Official. He above all should understand what could be happening with the laws.

The plot – and our concern! – thickens. It’s nice he has someone who knows the ropes to help him get to the heart of this dangerous situation. A rather timely situation.

Yes. Michael doesn’t fully grasp how much help his grandfather-in-law will be.

Sounds like she’s lucky her father has connections with law enforcement. It’ll be interesting to see what he finds out!

Yes. And he has been through it, as he was in the first book.

Thanks, Siren. It has been exciting to write. It will get a bit scary too.

You write a scary world. I think Rachel must have some connections too, but unlike her father, hers aren’t with law enforcement. Or, someone has an agenda and will use her to further it. Great writing, Jeff!

I fully intend to get people to think. I want this to be almost plausible. The first one is completely that way. I wrote it in 2016, before the whole ‘be careful what you say’ became an issue. Before the issues of people taking offense at everything. I had to rush to get this to print because my book was becoming a history book instead of Dystopian.
