Weekend Writing Warriors – 9/10/23 – The Transference II – Where is Masters?

Hey Weekend Writing Warriors. Welcome back my friends. It has been an eventful week. Busy with work and I attended a friend’s funeral this week. Not to get too graphic, but this family, the husband was missing for about seven years. They recently found his remains. Something like one of us would write about. Crazy to experience this in real life. He left behind a wife and three children, one who had been in our Sunday School class back when. I am glad they have closure, but it is still heartbreaking. Please pray for the family.

Well, to get back on track, it’s time for our snippet. We move into Chapter One of my new project, The Transference II. I still don’t know what to call what we’ve read last week, whether it be a Prologue or what.

I am excited to revisit Detective James Grady’s world, and the Crime Thriller genre. You can read all about this book here.

You can catch up on past snippets here.

SYNOPSIS:

Given that I am only four chapters in, I am still working on a full synopsis:
This book will take place roughly four years after the events of the first book.

Masters has retired and Grady now leads the team. All seems well until a series of murders take place that resemble the killings four years ago. Grady receives a call from Masters that he has discovered something at a local warehouse. A gun runner is using a long forgotten facility. Are the two events related? As the team is split between the two events that are tearing apart their city, it is a matter of time before an old enemy resurfaces and extends a challenge none of them expects.

SNIPPET:

Summary:
I should explain, which I meant to do last week, to give the full, ‘duhmm duhmm duhmm’ of the scene. I tend to forget there are those who haven’t read the book. The primary villain from the first book was Sophia Thoran/Steven Tanner. This character died at the end of the first novel. Consider this as you read the trailer from last week. Although it loses its effect without last week’s full snippet.

First, here is a the tail end of last week’s “prologue”:

The dark-haired woman was careful as she approached the bag. She looked back to the entrance they had entered, the one her visitors had left through, then up to the four skylights that let in the setting sun. The orange glow flooded the hangar, casting dust beams through the empty space. She knew she was clear; fear would drive those boys away. Fear of her position or fear of the bag they dropped being short.

“Grab the bag, and let’s go,” Mr. Greer finally spoke, then coughed. “This place gives me the creeps.”

The woman laughed, then, swallowed hard, “Greer, C’mon. Stay in character until we are back in the van.”

“Gotcha, Sophia.” Mr. Greer smiled.

This week we jump into Chapter One. An undisclosed period of time has elapsed. I have not figured this out at this time. I just know that there have been a series of murders, at least two cycles (two months). We will see how this plays out as I continue to write.

Detective James “Grady” Gradiosa entered the coffee shop, unsure what to expect. It had been over a year since the two had spoken. Was this a social call, or did his mentor have an ulterior motive for the call out of the blue? Even LaCrosse shrugged when he confided in him about the three o’clock morning wake-up call. Grady figured perhaps he had received one of the same calls. They had once been partners to the point of finishing each other’s sentences, so why was he calling him?

You want me to back you up? Lacrosse suggested. But Grady figured it best to go alone. If Masters wanted a group meeting, he would’ve asked for one.

::There is your ten (or so). Here is a bit more.::

Grady scanned the booths, but no grey-haired retiree faced him, and he was sure he would not see the back of a head, that wasn’t Masters’ style. Grady approached the counter and waived her over once the waitress was free.

“Seen the boss this morning?”

“Wish I had,” the aged brunette said with a grin. Her name tag said ‘Bridgette,’ “He should be here by now though. Not like him to not be here by now.”

“That’s what I figured. He messaged me to meet him here.”

“Hmmph,” Bridgette said, looking around the half-full restaurant.

“Well, I can wait a bit.”

“Get you anything, sweetie?”

“Breakfast special,” Grady said sitting at the counter.

“Comin’ right up,” she said and spun around.

Grady looked over his shoulder again, surveying the room. Nothing out of place. Two families, an elderly couple, and two solitary gentlemen, one in a veteran’s ball cap, spaced out on the counter beside him. He raised his coffee cup to the veteran, who nodded and sipped his cup.

Gino’s had once been a solitary pizza and Italian eatery. But with the neighborhood trend switching elderly residents, they converted it to more of a coffee and breakfast diner. Their business doubled. They still sold pizzas, and the sign out front still welcomed patrons, but the combination made Gino happy, if Gino was an actual person. He had never thought to ask.

THIS WEEK’S WRAP-UP:

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT:
Thanks for reading this week. And for your continued support.

Okay, I finally got around to it. The huge, and I say that with as big of an Italian accent as I can, announcement has been made. Little Reminders of Who I Will Become will be released on October 25th. I cannot wait. Now I will be busy with my day job and remembering to promote this. I am trying to get a cover made (and if you really look at the signature page, you got a peek) so I can begin to get a serious plug. My plan is to get a seat at a Barnes and Nobel. We shall see. If not, local venues will be my joy.

Catch up with everything even writing a blog. You can read it here, Please check it out.
Here’s to living the dream. God bless Writing Warriors!!
