SYNOPSIS:

Stephanie Marshall is the owner of a successful Charlotte, NC writing firm. She and her staff advertise for some of the biggest names up and down the east coast. Even though the writer’s life is exciting, and her company is in demand, she struggles with the monotony of home life. Stephanie is on the verge of an affair and has chosen to take the next step in that relationship.

… And then there is Carter.

Our angelic friend is back, and he visits Stephanie to teach her three lessons about her life. One that involves her past, one about her present life, and one that will challenge her to the reality of the choices she makes.

SNIPPET:

In our snippet we jump ahead into Chapter 16. Carter has, so far, taken Stephanie through her past, as we learned from our last time together, and a connection with her present, now Carter has one last adventure for her. This is where we pick up in today’s snippet.

Here is a link from our last last entry together:

Stephanie opened her eyes; it was dark and cold. The ground had a light covering of snow. It reminded her of the first snowfall of the season, not that North Carolina received a great deal of it. But this was not Carolina, she could feel it. But where was she? When was she? With the sun gone, she couldn’t judge the time, much less the date.

“Carter? Where did you go?” Stephanie was grateful for the lack of a post time traversing hangover. But not knowing where she was made her nervous. She took a deep breath, remembering Carter’s warning to remain calm and focused. If she was here to accomplish something, she needed to find and complete it. The problem was the hotel was nowhere to be seen, nor was the scent of the ocean. She did find the smell of gas and city tar.

::There is your ten (or so). Here is a bit more to finish the scene.::

“We’re definitely not in North Carolina, Stephanie,” she said to no one, or so she thought.

“Nope,” said a voice walking up to her. “You’re in Texas. Houston, to be exact. If you’re here for the meal? It isn’t for another few days.”

“The meal?”

“The meal for the homeless,” the man said.

“I will have you know I am anything but homeless,” Stephanie snapped, rubbing her arms.

“I apologize,” the man stepped back, hands surrendered. “I didn’t see your car. With weather like this, I wouldn’t think anyone would choose to walk in it.”

Stephanie looked around, the streets were empty, and the narrow road was void of cars. She did seem out of place. “My car is on the highway. I broke down and saw the sign,” she said, knowing that no one could really see the sign from the main road, although well-lit. She hadn’t even noticed it until the man had addressed her.

“Mmm-kay. Well, we’re closed, but I can let you in to make a phone call if you’d like. I’ll even make you a cup of coffee and offer you a slice of pie. I’m here to finish an article. I needed to get away from everything for a while, if you know what I mean.”

Stephanie snorted. “Yeah, I suppose. I could go for getting out of the cold.”

They walked up to the building, which looked like a double-wide home but had a sign that read Davie’s Deli above the roof.

“Davie’s Deli?” Stephanie said. The name seemed familiar, but she couldn’t place it. “This doesn’t look like a restaurant.”

The man laughed, “That’s what everyone says. It’s how Mom and Pop designed it. They wanted everyone to feel like they were coming home to eat while still going out.”

“Genius,” Stephanie said, taking in the rest of her surroundings. “Does it bring in much business?”

“And how. It’s one of Houston’s hidden gems,” the man said, unlocking the door.

“Are you the manager?”

“In a sense. I’m the owner,” the man said with a heavy voice. “Come on in, and I’ll tell you all about it. My name is Aaron Stephenson,” he said, extending his gloved hand. Stephanie accepted it with a bare, cold hand. When their hands met, though, Stephanie’s memory was triggered. She looked at the sign again, then back to Aaron—Carter’s friend Aaron.

“Nice to meet you, Aaron. I’m Stephanie. I hope you have cocoa in there,” she said with a laugh.

Here we find Stephanie waking up, in Houston, Texas. Something has occurred with her waking up half way across the country, in the dark, and outside the famous deli that has been foretold by Carter himself. So, what is so special about Aaron and Davie’s Deli and when is Stephanie and what is so important about the time she is in?
